SEASONING COUNTS
When timber is first cut the moisture content is around 60%. Ideally what we are looking for with burnable logs is a moisture content of around 25% and lower. This is why seasoning is crucial. The time the wood spends resting after being felled and is exposed to the elements, it is losing its moisture count naturally and becoming more economical to burn. We then split and store the logs in a well vented dry barn and allow to air-dry further so that by the time they get to you they are ready to burn.
STORAGE ADVICE
Before bringing firewood into the home give it a quick look over for pests. Shaking and banging the firewood together will help displace any pests on the surface or possibly exiting the firewood.
Keep your firewood away from direct contact with the ground / soil if possible. It will keep the firewood clean as well as going some way to preventing issues with rising damp. Drainage is very important to the health of the firewood. Having it raised from the ground will help with the air circulation. Covering piles of firewood with items such as tarpaulins are advised against as moisture can be locked into the wood pile and encourage decay / mould.
USAGE
It is vitally important that the firewood has a steady air circulation. Ideally a log store situated outside with a water-proof roof to keep off the elements and allow a flow of natural breeze is generally considered the best way to store your wood.
Operate a first in first out system with your firewood, as this will help keep unwanted pests to a minimum. On this point, it is generally good advice to not store firewood inside as a rule. It prevents a natural product, usually kept outside, limited time within your home.
THE ENVIRONMENT
Trees that are planted specifically for wood burning use can provide a continuous and indefinite supply of environmentally friendly heat and energy.
The carbon that is released by the timber whilst burning is only releasing the carbon dioxide that was actually used by the tree whilst growing. Therefore there is no actual increase in carbon levels via this activity. The only actual increase is when transporting the timber and the processing element, this is why we strive to source as locally as possible.
The process is completely sustainable and if managed correctly benefits the environment, forestry wildlife as well as ourselves.
